Getting in the Mexican Groove.

On our first full day here, we rose early and after a couple cups of coffee we headed out for our first walk.  The walk headed south on the beach to the main pier where the cruise ship shuttles and the ferries disgorge their loads of people.  The beach walk is about 2 miles (one way), or a little more, and there were a lot of people, both local and tourista, enjoying the warm morning. We sat a few minutes on the pier while Gary pointed out the places where we had stayed and where he and Nancy stayed years ago, up and down the beach.

I was wondering if I had brought my guitar how much money I could make setting here to get the tourist dollars!

We had arrived at the pier just as a shuttle released its load of people.  We walked out on the beach but chose to walk back through town on the main street, Fifth Ave.  As we passed various venues we were bombarded with invitations to go fishing, snorkeling, diving, have cerveza, massages and much more.

We walked back to Mahekal as the stores were just opening up…… oh I need to describe the security presence:  Now and then we saw the typical police officer(s) with side arms, and driving a motorcycle or truck.  But then there were the security men… carrying automatic weapons…. Not slung on their back but in their hands ready for immediate use.  For example, we saw a jewelry store being opened and there were three armed guards to assure there were no incidents.  Impressive.

Just as we got close to Mahekal, we stopped at the Mini Super… a local party store, we picked up beer and wine, Gary got rum… the prices much better here than at the hotel’s bar.  We got back to Mehekal , freshened up and then had breakfast.  Here’s a picture of our dining area.  The food was really good and the fruit unbelievably fresh.

After breakfast we went to our rooms and changed into bathing suits.   The rest of the day we hung out on the beach trying to melt the Michigan ice out of our veins.

After 5PM we went to our room, showered and dressed for dinner.  By dressed I mean that we put on clothes instead of bathing suits!  We met at the on-site bar for happy hour.  Tonight we had margaritas, Gary and Nancy had Pina Coladas.
At 7 we went to the dining room where we were given the menu for the evening, and the salad/hors d’ouvre bar was discussed.  Our drink orders were taken and we proceeded to eat.  We completely enjoyed the meal!

We retired to our rooms to get ready for another grueling day on the beach….  Vacationing  is such hard work.
More to follow….

Preparation and Arrival in Mexico; Getting settled!

NOTE:  due to poor WiFi, and of course our desire to be no where  else than the beach this blog was put together and then imported here upon our return.

The timing of this trip is rather fortuitous because we’ve been having such a harsh winter.  The snowiest in years, the coldest in years and so on and so on
We’re traveling with Gary and Nancy (with whom we always traveled to Mexico).  Our destination is Playa Del Carmen….. south of Cancun by about an hour.
Packing for the trip was an easy thing… just shorts and bathing suits… the resort we’re staying in, Mahekal Beach Resort (translated: Magical) …. Where we get two meals a day and ocean view cottage.
MaryAlice is not comfortable flying but is game.  Our plan was to stay at the Holiday Inn by Metro on Sunday and so we could avoid any early morning traffic stress and have free parking while we’re gone.  Quite the deal!!  I was a little concerned that the large implant in my leg might be an issue but I waltzed through security with no problem.
Our flight took only 3 hours, MA and I were blessed with the screaming kid in the row behind us…. Oh well.  The flight was direct to Cancun where a driver from the hotel with a large sign with MaryAlice’s and Gary’s name printed on it) greeted us and drove us down to Playa (with a quick stop for cold cervezas).

The resort is stunning.  It’s family- friendly and the room we’re in has just been updated.

We were on the beach by 2PM local time on Monday.

Gary and Nancy are veterans of Mexican vacations and especially vacations at Mahecal and have their own itinerary:  Get up in the morning, drink coffee, walk to town or away from town and back (typically ~ 4.5 miles round trip), on the homeward lap stop and pick up supplies (beer, wine, rum) at the ‘Mini Mart’, freshen up, then eat a huge breakfast (included at the resort), veg on the beach all day, retire to their room ~ 4  for drinks  and snacks.  Then go to dinner ~7.
We’re doing it all… but the walking seemed hard at first (on the  beach  and then through town) but it’s become habit now.
Since Gary and Nancy have been here for about 9 years in a row they know and have become friends with many of the staff (which will benefit us as I will explain later).  They also have struck up friendships with other people who are frequent visitors to Mahekal … we met one of those couples, Mary Jane and Jerry, who we had a fabulous time getting to know.
The walks are challenging for me…. I still err on the safe side because of my knee surgery… but I am surviving and am finding the walk through the town’s local section educational….  Just one note:  the stereotype about Mexicans being lazy is TOTALLY wrong.  (more on this later).
OK… I took some beach time off to write this… (BTW wifi is at a premium here and I will post this later)  so I’m back to the beach..
Oh and so far everyday has been sunny, mid to high 80s with a breeze off the water…. Think we’ll survive!

It's Time to hit the road!

Greetings Friends!!1
We're overdue to hit the road.... as you might  know we love  traveling and have been to Glacier National Park (most recently) Anna Maria Island Fla, Maine, and our epic Route 66 trip ... all documented by our maryalicendennis blogs.  Now starting 2014 we head to Mexico.   No.. we're not driving, although that would be interesting!  This trip we're traveling with our long time friends Gary and Nancy.  We fly out Monday, February 17.
With the way winter has been in Michigan, this is truly a Godsend.
Please follow us on this blog, please feel free to comment and we'll try to respond.

I understand that there will be WiFi where we're staying in Playa Del Carmen so we should post lots of pics.... especially when we explore ruins (I am looking forward to see Coba, ruins we saw years ago and climbed the pyramid!!)
As Willey Nelson says:  'On the road again, I just can't wait to get back on the road again...'

CAN'T WAIT!
